Clavariadelphus unicolor

Clavariadelphus unicolor (Berk. & Ravenel) Corner 1950

From its flattened top, I initially thought this was Clavariadelphus truncatus. However, that species grows in coniferous woods at higher elevations. Clavariadelphus unicolor can be found in autumn under deciduous trees, such as hickory and beech. The flesh of all Clavariadelphus species tends to be “spongy”. This is in the Clavariadelphaceae family of the Gomphalles order.
