BOLETE-LIKE FUNGI

'BOLETE-LIKE fungi’ refers to cap and stem mushrooms having soft-spongy pores (or gills) that are removable - unlike the tough pore surfaces of most polypores. As a consequence of DNA analysis, numerous fungi in the Boletaceae family have had or will have their genus names changed  from ‘Boletus’ to another genus name. Species names are generally retained. For the time being, only boletes related to the type species, Boletus edulis, will retain the genus name ‘Boletus’. Below the new genera and their species are listed alphabetically. To view examples and descriptions of paricular species in this family, click on the names listed.
